Going up Green Wal-Mart


What do you think? Which is the most popular grocery store in the world? Most people say “Wal-Mart”. People usually go to Wal-Mart, so lots of people have become interested in Wal-mart’s Green-Washing. Wal-Mart is a global company in the world. According to Green-Mart or Green-Washing’s article, “Wal-Mart is not the first company you’d probably think of when it comes to environmental awareness.” (Wilson, 2008). The author thought that Wal-Mart is a green washing company. Nevertheless, they tried several ways, but they still are in the same situation. “Wal-Mart announced yesterday that it will begin asking its suppliers to measure their carbon footprint and find ways to reduce it, part of an effort by the world’s largest retailer to transform itself into a more environmentally friendly company” (Mui, 2007, para.1). It is only one side’s opinion. Wal-Mart looks like a good company. They just focus on outside, none going to attention inside. This is a ridiculous situation, because if people want to change something, they will transfer the basic foundation; however, Wal-Mart is jumped up, they aren’t faced with the basic problem. Wal-Mart had a bad point. They would bring environmental problem, so they followed those resources.

First of all, Wal-Mart should reduce the carbon dioxide level. Carbon dioxide is a cause of air pollution. Lots of products include chemical resources by carbon dioxide. Such as hair spray, that include carbon dioxide so its cause of global warming. if carbon dioxide flows the air, it would cause of air pollution. Wal-Mart doesn’t have a standard level for carbon dioxide. They should have a limit of carbon dioxide level.

Second, Wal-Mart should start focus on customers. In Korea most markets have specific events. One of the most popular events is an open class. It means, marts pay attention to customers. If a mart wants to go green mart, the most important resource is customers. Wal-Mart should start class and teaching that good method for recycling and make recycle product.

Finally, Wal-Mart should organize its own recycling system. In Korea, when people go to a mart, they should buy the plastic bag. Each Bag has a 50-cent cost. But Wal-Mart uses too many plastic bags. The Korean people use recycling bags. It is very common.

Opponents say Wal-Mart is doing well in Green Mission. They want to solve the environmental problem so they try several ways, such as collecting plastic bags from elementary schools. However, it is just an outside problem. Wal-Mart won’t pay attention to its own store problem. If Wal-Mart didn’t waste plastic bags, they wouldn’t need to collect them from elementary school students. It will improve the appearance of Wal-Mart image.

In conclusion, Wal-Mart has tried to solve the environmental problem; it is a good attitude. Nevertheless, the environment is still having a problem. It shows that Wal-Mart should transfer to basic form. Whether it changes or not, it is related to the environment.
